Do I NEED A REferral from my doctor?
You DO NOT need a referral from your doctor to see a physical therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of July, 2015, physical therapists were given the legal authority (known as "direct access") to evaluate and treat a patient for up to 30 calendar days without a physician referral. If your physical therapist is concerned that your problem is beyond his knowledge and ability to treat safely and effectively, he will refer you back to the physician of your choice for further medical evaluation. If your physical therapy care requires more than 30 days to complete, then your physical therapist will contact your physician of choice for a referral to continue therapy at that time. If you have seen another medical provider (physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, chiropractor, or dentist) in the two weeks prior to your appointment, for the problem for which you are seeing us, then your therapist is required by law to notify that practitioner that you are receiving physical therapy services and provide them a copy of the initial visit results.
If you are planning to submit your invoice from Primary Solutions to your insurance company for an "out-of-network" reimbursement, then you will need to see if your plan requires a physician referral. If so, you may wish to seek this referral prior to beginning your therapy with us.
